We’d been traveling east for several hours, at times using trails so overgrown with foliage and low-hanging trees we had to dismount and lead the animals through in single file.

It annoyed me because it seemed like the perfect time for an ambush. Despite his solemn promise, I didn’t trust Rowan as far as I could throw him but did believe he cared for Kenna. I was banking on his feelings for her to keep us protected. Wandering in unfamiliar places was irritating me, especially when the safety of my family required me to rely on others I hadn’t properly vetted first.

“I hear water,” Portia said, keeping her voice low.

“We’re very near to Gorias,” Rowan whispered. “In fact, I am surprised we have not reached a sentry yet.”

“Halt!” An unseen voice called. “Who seeks access to the Land of Gorias?”

Everyone stopped in unison, and I glanced at Rowan. “Go ahead.”

“It is I, Prince Rowan of the Land of Murias. Along with my traveling party, I seek safety and sanctuary from Queen Primrose. We would like an audience with Her Highness.”

“One moment,” the unseen speaker said.

There was a slight hum of lowered voices, followed by the rustling of leaves. Two tall Fae warriors stepped into view, glowing balls of witch light floating overhead. They resembled Rowan with their long platinum blond hair, high cheekbones, and pale skin. They were dressed in green armor that looked too delicate to offer any protection in battle. Still, I had no doubt they’d somehow fashioned it to have exceptional strength. It resembled a coat of mail but was made from overlapping metals in the shape of leaves. Even in the dim lighting, the armor was impressive, never making a sound as the warriors moved about.

“We will take you to the palace,” the taller one spoke. “Whether or not the Queen will answer your call for an audience is up to her. However, your message will be delivered to her as soon as she wakes.”

Rowan shook his head. “I require an audience with Her Majesty tonight.”

The second Fae stepped forward. “And what is so important that we should risk the wrath of waking our Queen? She does not like to be disturbed in the evening hours.”

Rowan held his gaze, straightening. “You will tell Primrose that a party being pursued by the Dark Fae seeks sanctuary in her city. You may tell her we are on a mission that has the blessing of Brigid, High Fae Priestess of the Isle of Apples.” Rowan raised the amulet at his neck. “You can see the mark of Brigid inside this stone of protection. Each person in my party has one.”

The two studied the stone before glancing at each other.

“Why are the Dark Ones following you?” the taller one asked.

“Come on,” I said, stepping forward. “If we keep chatting out here in the middle of nowhere, we’re risking our safety and yours. We’re looking for my daughter and her friend who were captured.”

“Your daughter and this friend were captured by the Dark Fae?” the second guard asked.
